Rama Ekadasi occurs on the bright fortnight of the tamil month Karthigai
(Nov-Dec).
Once there lived a king Musukundan, he had a daughter called Chandrapaaka. She was married to a king Shobanan. Musukundan ordered everybody to observe ekadasi pooja, because he was very pious and always observed ekadasi viratham. It was ekadasi and the servants gave orders that everybody in the kingdom had to observe the pooja and should not eat the whole day. They must keep thinking of Lord Vishnu and do poojas.
On hearing this king Shobanan told his wife that he cannot skip even one meal and how could he live without eating a whole day. His wife was afraid because her father would forgive any mistake, but he can’t tolerate a person who does not observe the ekadasi pooja. King Shobanan took up the fasting, suffered a lot the whole day and he died the next day morning. On hearing the news his wife also died the next minute.
At that time there was a vimmanam from the sky which took both of them to Vaikundam (Heaven). So even if one observes this Ekadasi without interest, he will be blessed.
