Indira Ekadasi occurs on the bright fortnight of the tamil month Iyppasi
(Oct-Nov).
In Kridha Ugam, there was a king named Indirasena who ruled the kingdom of Mahendrapuri. One day sage Narada came to his palace and told him that his father was undergoing suffering in hell. The king pleaded to sage Narada to help him save his father. Sage Narada asked him to observe Indira Ekadasi which is supposed to relieve the sins committed by one's forefathers. Therfore it is believed that if a person observes fast on Indira Ekadasi all his sins will be eradicated. Even further the sins
of forefathers will also be liberated and they are said to go to heaven from hell.
