Padmanabha Ekadasi occurs on the dark fortnight of the tamil month Purattasi
(Sep-Oct).
There was a king named Manthatha and everybody in his kingdom lived happily for several years. Suddenly there was a severe drought in the kingdom and there was no rain for three years. The king went to the forest where Angiras Muni was in penance. The king explained the suffering to the sage and asked for help. The sage then explained to the king that there was a person in his kingdom who did not do his karma. Instead he was doing the karma of others.
The sage explained that it was because of his sinful life that there was no rain in the kingdom. The sage asked the king to kill this person and there would again be rain in his kingdom. But the kind hearted king did not want to kill the person and asked for an alternate solution. The sage then asked the king to observe Padmanaba Ekadasi. The king did as instructed by the sage and there was rain again in the kingdom and everybody was happy thereafter.
